This hostel is named after Neville Thomas Bonner, a Jagera man, born on Ukerebagh Island, Tweed Heads, NSW in 1922.
In 1971 Bonner became the first Aboriginal to enter the Federal Parliament, as a Senator for Queensland, where he served from 1971 to 1983.
In 1979, Bonner was named Australian of the Year and in 1984 he was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia.
Neville Bonner was a founding Director of AHL and served on the Board for 10 years. The suburb of Bonner in Canberra bears his name.
Neville Bonner continued to be a strong advocate for First Nations people’s rights until his death in 1999.
