‘Galawu’ comes from the Aboriginal language. Gapapuygu and means ‘A place of shelter during walkabout’. In 1981, the hostel was given this name by Dhawa, head of the Gupapuygu tribe, who created this name by combining the local area names of Galawinku, Millingimbi and Yirrakala in the Arnhem Land Reserve.
AHL acknowledges the Larrakia People as the traditional owners of the land on which we operate the hostel. AHL pay our respects to their Elders past, present and emerging. |
