Iris Clay was born on Palm Island, an Aboriginal reserve off the coast of Queensland, near Townsville. Iris Clay Hostel honours a courageous Aboriginal woman who was a campaigner for her people’s legal rights and argued strongly for more Aboriginal social services. Iris was also a Director of AHL from 1974 to 1976. Iris Clay passed away in 1979. AHL acknowledges the Gugu-Badhun (TBC) People as the traditional owners of the land on which we operate the hostel. AHL pay our respects to their Elders past, present and emerging. |
