The hostel was named after William Townsend Onus (1906-68), a Wiradjuri man, who was born at the New South Wales Cummeragunja Mission and education at the Thomas Shadrach James mission school.  During the late 1930s William joined the Aborigines progressive Association.  Later he became secretary and full-time employee of the association to fight against the injustices of the Australian society and for the recognition and rights of his people.

AHL acknowledges the Woiworung People as the traditional owners of the land on which we operate the hostel. AHL pay our respects to their Elders past, present and emerging.
